We’re not teaching children about poo. We’re teaching them how scientists think.

Poo Lab™ turns something children already find fascinating into a playful scientific investigation.

Building their language, observation, comparison, prediction, reasoning skills, and confidence through hands-on, multi-sensory play.

💩 Every poo tells a story…

Children become Chief Scientists, investigating mysterious poo to work out who left it behind and what they might have eaten.

They examine the evidence, notice clues, compare, question, predict and explain their ideas.

And because the investigation is tactile, visual, playful and highly motivating, children don’t need to rely on spoken language alone to take part.

That makes Poo Lab™ particularly accessible for younger children and children with SEND, ALN, EAL or emerging communication skills.

Loved by nurseries, educators and families.

🔎 The answer isn't the important bit.

What matters is how children get there.

A child might notice a berry.
Another might point to a feather.
Someone else might remember that bears eat insects.

The practitioner becomes the Chief Scientist, asking questions such as:

What did you notice?
What makes you think that?
Which clue helped you?
Could it belong to something else?

Suddenly, the poo becomes the starting point for sustained shared thinking, language, reasoning and child-led enquiry.

🧪 What are children actually learning?

Through every Case File, children are naturally developing:

  • Communication & vocabulary  – describing textures, colours, sizes, ingredients and discoveries.
  • Scientific thinking – observing, comparing, predicting, investigating and drawing conclusions.
  • Attention & engagement – starting with a mystery children genuinely want to solve.
  • Sensory exploration – touching, squeezing, mixing, smelling and examining.
  • Critical thinking – exploring the evidence to discover the answer.
  • Confidence – every child can contribute an observation, thought, action, gesture, and choice.

It begins with a mystery 💩.

From Pirate Poo and Alien Poo to Polar Bear Poo, Mermaid Poo and Toucan Poo, children explore and examine the evidence as they crack the case.

Each investigation provides the practitioner with the framework they need to lead the enquiry while leaving plenty of room for children to take it in their own direction.

What they say about... 💩

“Little Magic Train really gets the children excited, and they talk about it for days.  They recently enjoyed making mermaid poo and have been telling their parents they cannot wait to make pirate poo.” Ann, Wootton and Dry Sandford Preschool, Oxfordshire.

“The heart of inclusive learning lies within sensory-rich experiences that speak to every learner. The Poo Lab™ offers an exploratory and playful pathway into investigation, with meaningful ways to engage through gesture, action, noticing, choosing, and discovery. It’s a shared journey, inviting every learner to join in and explore together in their own way.”
